A Brief History of Cartier

The story of Cartier Eyewear originates with the king of jewellers- specifically, one French high jeweller, Louis-Francois Cartier. who came onto the Parisian scene in 1847. Since then, the name Cartier has spread all over the world. From the Russian Imperial Family, to rich American Industrialists, to the English Aristocracy; everyone quickly became enchanted with the magic of Cartier from the outset.

There was plenty of excitement as elites flocked to the first Cartier Boutique on New Bond Street, opened by Louis-Francois’s grandson, Jacques, in 1909. He was also the first one to cultivate links with some of the most remarkable Indian Maharajas, who were so impressed with Cartier that they entrusted some of their most dazzling gemstones to him to be reset in beautiful pieces of jewellery in a modern style.

Cartier was awarded 15 royal patents between 1904 and 1939, becoming official supplier to the most powerful dynasties. Cartier is still one of the first preferences for the Royals; most recently we saw Kate Middleton wearing a Cartier tiara on her wedding day in 2011.

La Panthère de Cartier

The credit for the signature Cartier panther that we see now on all their accessories, including Cartier sunglasses and glasses, goes to Jeanne Toussaint, who was made director of fine jewellery for Cartier in 1918 and worked closely with Louis Cartier, the oldest grandson of Louis-Francois, to bring the panther to life by setting gems to represent the animal’s fur.

She was so bold and confident, that she was famously nicknamed ‘la Panthère’ – a symbolic name that brought femininity, independence and elegance to Cartier and continues to be the core of the brand today. The panther soon adorned all Cartier fashion accessories and became a timeless, fearless emblem.

From jewellery, to watches, Cartier has gone from strength to strength and soon introduced their accessories in the 20th century, including leather goods, and of course, eyewear.

Cartier Eyewear

Cartier Eyewear holds the same design standards as any of their other accessories, which means that only the finest and most luxurious materials are used, including gold, silver, diamonds, platinum, titanium, Rolf wood and buffalo horn.

Cartier is also one of the only ‘Maisons’ that has its own manufacturing location for eyewear, making it even more unique as a luxury brand. Only the most skilled craftsmen work to produce exquisite pieces, and just like any other Cartier item, it all starts with a drawing from the design studio which gives rise to a wax sculpture. This is then converted into a resin model or 3D design. Modellers then work to create a prototype that has to be approved before going on to the production stage.

Cartier glasses actually have to pass a total of 25 tests before the final work of art becomes available to the public – a testament to the attention to detail that only the king of jewellers could accomplish.

Santos de Cartier

One of the most recent lines to be introduced for SS18 is the Santos de Cartier Collection, which is inspired by Alberto Santos-Dumont, who is widely regarded as Brazil’s first successful pilot.

The entire range is full of fresh frame designs with classic details. This statement style is displayed with precious metals, lightweight structures and edgy accents. Each model carries a distinguishable screw motif, reminiscent of airplane rivet. These frames have a modern feel without losing any of their old world Cartier luxury in the process.

Panthère de Cartier

Cartier has also added new models to its iconic Panthère de Cartier collection for SS18 to continue channelling the brand’s emblematic panther whilst retaining a modern feel to the glasses. You’ll be able to find signature panther motif as the defining detail on each side of the glasses or sunglasses, which completely encapsulates the motto for the Panthère de Cartier Collection this season: Bold and Fearless.
