Want to take a deeper dive into the Police personality? Let’s get started by looking back to where it all began.

Italian roots

1983,  Belluno, Northern Italy. The De Rigo brothers Ennio and Walter are fledgling entrepreneurs having established a small artisan company Charmes Lunettes 5 years earlier.  Inspired by the  strong, bold eyewear designs worn by American cops, they launched their first eyewear brand and named it Police. This unisex eyewear range exuded a metropolitan feel and its success marked the first of many for the De Rigo brothers. While their roots were Italian, their aspirations were international and their flair for design would soon reach a global audience.

Global domination

Ennio and Walter’s enterprise grew to become De Rigo SpA, a leading manufacturer and distributor of high-end eyewear, with its house brand Police joined by others, including Carolina Herrera, Converse and Dunhill. Police glasses and sunglasses, are now available in over 80 countries.

The Police brand has also grown from eyewear to encompass a range of  lifestyle accessories, including leather goods, perfumes, watches and jewellery, partly thanks to its brand ambassadors, which have included Bruce Willis, George Clooney, David Beckham, Antonio Banderas and football star, Neymar. The latest addition to this elite group is F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton who has collaborated with the brand’s designers to produce the “Police x Lewis Hamilton” range of frames: 4 sunglasses and 3 prescription glasses.

Keeping it contemporary

Police pushes the boundaries to create frames that speak to those who don’t want to conform and love the urban spirit. Lewis Hamilton captured the drive behind the design of Police glasses perfectly when he said in a press release:

“On and off the track I’m always looking to challenge myself and fulfil my potential in new ways,  so I’ve loved the design process and have learnt so much from working alongside Police’s brilliant creative team. Together we’ve pushed every boundary…”

This newest collection offers a mix of metal and bio-acetate frames, with the latter highlighting the emphasis on a more sustainable approach to eyewear creation. The designs also incorporate the innovative use of rubber and titanium. Wearers can enjoy iconic detailing, such as the engraved or embossed eagle logo on the temples.

The latest Police sunglasses in the UK, courtesy of the Lewis Hamilton collaboration, reinvent 1980s designs with a modern edge. Metal double bridges and rims meet bold acetate fronts. Shield sunglasses capture sporting speed and adrenaline but merge it with soft rubber frames and nose pads for comfort.

Speaking of sunglasses, Men In Black: International actors have their very own Police sunglasses, worn onscreen, which are now available for everyone to enjoy.  The Origins 1 SPL872 sunglasses keep it simple but stylish with a polished black acetate frame, smoke lens, Police 1983 gold plaque on the inner surface of the temples and the striking gold, 1990s-style Police logo on the outer surface of the temples. This full-rimmed, square-shaped frame makes a bold statement on men or women.

Something for everyone

While the very latest additions to the Police range of eyewear are making a splash on the eyewear scene right now, all of the frames in the current Police catalogue bring the same undaunted look which can uplift any outfit. For every face shape, for men and for women, Police frames don’t just make you fashion-forward, they make you a force for fashion. Frame shapes include square,  oval, round, pilot, hexagonal and cateye. When it comes to sunglasses, lens types include polarised, glitter-effect, anti-reflection, mirror and photochromic. With so many options to choose from, alongside the endless creativity of Police designers bringing out fresh styles year on year, there really is something for everyone.
